  • 14.Commodities Which May be Fumigated Raw agricultural commodities, Animal feed and Feed ingredients 14 OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION Shelled Corn Winter Wheat Wild Bird Feed Peanuts Almonds, Brazil nuts, walnuts, etc.
  • 15.Commodities Which May be Fumigated Processed foods 15 OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION Spaghetti Noodles Rice Flour
  • 16.Commodities Which May be Fumigated Non-food commodities, including Tobacco 16 OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION Feathers Leather Tobacco
  • 17.BEFORE YOU START Read the Applicators Manual and SDS completely prior to undertaking any fumigation Follow the instructions given in order to obtain optimum results 17 OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION It is a violation of the law to use this product in a manner inconsistent with its labeling
  • 18.Fumigation Management Plan 18 The certified applicator is responsible for working with the owners and/or responsible employees of the structure and/or area to be fumigated to develop a Fumigation Management Plan (FMP). The FMP is intended to ensure a safe and effective fumigation. The FMP must address characterization of the structure and/or area, and include appropriate monitoring and notification requirements, consistent with, but not limited to, the following: OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION
  • 19.Fumigation Management Plan A Checklist for a Fumigation Management Plan Preliminary Planning and Preparation Personnel Monitoring Notification Sealing Procedures Application Procedures and Fumigation Period Post-Application Operations 19 OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION
  • 20.Guides to Effective Fumigation Apply proper dosage Confirm volume Label application rate 20 Proper sealing Permanent seals Temporary seals OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION
  • 21.Guides to Effective Fumigation 21 Adequate exposure period Avoid minimums Think days; not hours Adequate temperature Commodity & Ambient Extended exposure period OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION
  • 22.Guides to Effective Fumigation 22 Insure lethal concentration Monitor! Monitor again! Monitor some more! OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION
  • 23.Applicator & Worker Exposure 23 OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION
  • 24.24 0-0.3ppm No Respiratory Protection Required Respiratory Protection OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION
  • 25.25 0.3-15ppm = Full face canister mask OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION
  • 26.26 Above 15ppm or unknown concentration =SCBA OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION
  • 27.Application Procedures 27 OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION
  • 28.Fumigation of Vertical Storages 28 OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION
  • 29.29 Allows precise control of dosage Insures uniform distribution of pellets in grain mass Workers do not have to enter bin/tank to apply fumigant Used to apply pellets as grain is going into storage Automatic Pellet Dispenser OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION
  • 30.Pellet Dispenser in Use 30 OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION
  • 31.Fumigation of Flat Storages 31 OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION
  • 32.Stored Grain Application Methods 32 Probe Method Pros: Most commonly used method Inexpensive Cons: Uneven distribution of pellets throughout the grain mass Workers must enter bin/tank to apply fumigant OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION
  • 33.Probe Method 33 OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION
  • 34.34 Applying Fumigant to Aeration Ducts OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION

  • 38.Sealing Ventilator fans must be covered... 38 OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION
  • 39.Sealing Vents or doors that may give access to the inside of the silo/bin must be covered or taped... 39 OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION
  • 40.Sealing The grain must be covered if you cannot seal off the vent system at the top of the silo / bin... 40 OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION
  • 41.41 Insures even distribution of fumigant Workers do not have to enter bin/tank to apply fumigant Used for grains already in storage System installation can be either permanent or temporary Dosage rates can often be reduced Recirculation Method OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION Sparkless Recirculation Fan
  • 42.The J-System® Low Air Flow Recirculation Method is designed to move the high fumigant concentration generated on the surface of the silo to the bottom of the silo via a piping system equipped with a Detia-Degesch Blower. Recirculation Method OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION
  • 43.Recirculation Method 43 Permanent installation using PVC piping OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION
  • 44.Recirculation Method 44 Temporary installation using flexible plastic drainage pipe OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION
  • 45. Confirm the placement of placards to secure entrance into any structure under fumigation. 45 OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION
  • 46.Aeration of Fumigated Commodities No matter what application method is used, the fumigation is not complete until the site contains 0.3ppm or less of phosphine 46 OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION
  • 47.What if….. Contingency planning Be prepared for the unexpected 47 OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION
  • 48.Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your fumigant supplier and/or manufacturer! 48 OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION
