  • 1.Clustered Regulatory Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats and the Future of Genetic Engineering
  • 2.What is CRISPR/Cas-9? Bacterium Immune System Bacteriophage attacks Bacteria stores the DNA for future recognition Creates a RNA Guide that shows the Cas-9 enzyme where to cut the virus DNA out of the bacteria’s genome
  • 3.
  • 4.CRISPR/Cas-9 And Its Uses Disease Prevention The Improvement of Animals and Plants Human Modification
  • 5.Disease Prevention Cancer Huntington’s, Hemophilia, and other genetic disorders Cryptosporidium HIV/AIDS Malaria, Zika, and other diseases carried by mosquitoes
  • 6.Plant and Animal Modification Plants that can survive harsher environments and produce more Cashmere Goats that produce more and longer fibers Muscular Cows Chimeric Pigs
  • 7.Human Modification Modification of human embryos to create genetically modified humans Most controversial aspect of CRISPR/Cas-9 Scientist need a societal consensus in order to continue this type of modification Which leads to the focus of my study...
  • 8.Research question In order to gauge the current influence on societal opinion, how are public media outlets currently portraying CRISPR/Cas-9?
  • 9.Methodology Systematic Review of current public media outlets’ articles
  • 10.

  • 12.
  • 13.What Do These Results Mean? Mean: 1.225 Mode: 2 Overall, the general media seems to be more accepting and excited for the use of CRISPR in animals, plants, and humans.
  • 14.Conclusion Most media outlets are releasing articles that support CRISPR and its use in plants and animals, and for disease prevention and elimination in humans.
  • 15.Implications The results of this research paints a bright future for CRISPR and its influence and acceptance in the coming years. In the near future, we will be able to prevent horrible diseases that kill thousands of people per day and improve the quality of life for a countless amount of other people.
  • 16.Limitations Amount of data Media is not completely indicative of societal opinion Lack of negative articles
  • 17.Directions For Further Study Differently Weighted Articles Large Scale Survey Future research is needed in this rapidly expanding field
