Questões-chave: Que estrutura cognitiva é ativada no desenhador?

The research project The Draughtsperson studies the cognitive processes involved in the activity of drawing. Between observation, representation and creativity, the technical and artistic brain organizes itself in an overlapping of neuronal circuits and mental products, which, by recruiting different functions and decisions, determine the quality of the draughtsperson.
The draughtsperson's thinking and identity are thus developed through functions of sensory perception, visual attention, spatial construction, procedural memory, operational intelligence, cultural interpretation, associated motricity and gesture composition. The artistic modelling of the visuomotor system is activated within these functions, feedback by intersections that reconcile precision and transfer skills with the draughtsperson's practice of deviations and graphic expressions.
The organization of functions also acquires particularities within the different artistic modalities and professions, in a spectrum from observational drawings to project drawings, which serve as case studies. For example, in Portugal, among other uses, the term Draughtsperson was used in architecture to designate who executed the delivery drawings and presentation of a project. With the advent of the digital society and the migration to vectorial drawing, despite the change in medium continuing to maintain the function, the use of the term returned to designate the conceptual and intellectual dimension of the draughtsperson.

The aim of the research project is to map the cognitive relationships of the draughtsperson's brain in the construction of the mental activity that results from the experience we call drawing. Eye movements and manual trajectories trigger a journey through this visuospatial mapping of anatomical, neuronal and cognitive convergences, which are connected to cultural, historical and social itineraries, in a cluster that allows one to visualize the processes involved in the epistemological origins and limits of drawing.
From the sketch to the project, the scientific reflection converge to the specialized domains of neuroaesthetics, the experience of beauty, the creative universality and individuality. The cognitive mapping is guided by sources of artistic production: visual organization and composition, structural elements of plasticity language, systems and methods of technical and graphic representation, treatises and traditions of drawing (proportion, scale, perspective, shadow, colour), expression of marks, medium and supports, emergence of new digital technologies.
Key-questions: What cognitive structure is activated in the draughtsperson? What networks, regions, processes and brain functions participate in it? What is the impact of systems, methods, marks and instruments of representation? How is the multiplicity of graphic records (descriptive, operative and creative) aggregated in the construction of the identity of the architect's brain? How are the circuits of project drawing practice processed as a transfer of observational drawing? What is, in this context, knowing how to draw?
